Rob and I go to New Hampshire!

While I have been out traveling the northeast with art shows, Rob was able to fly up for a little mini- vacation. I picked him up at the Boston Airport and we headed up to New Hampshire. Why New Hampshire  - why not - we hadn't been there before.

Our first stop was in Salem  NH at America's Stonehenge.
I had no idea that we had our own Stonehenge.
As we walked around we learned so much. America's Stonehenge is
an accurate astronomically aligned calendar. It was and still can be
used to determine specific solar and lunar events of the year.
How crazy is that?  We're talking 2000 BC and this civilization
 had this knowledge.
What's a tourist attraction without an Alpaca?
Next we hit Merrimack to visit the Anheuser-Busch Brewery
Okay, beer fans, here's the proof, they really use hops.

And there was a car show, how cool! I want this car.
If you are going to drive a bug it should be a kegerator
The Clydesdales
After a night in North Conway, we head to Echo Lake to
hike up to Cathedral Ledge
What a view
Robbie on the Ledge!!

Good times. Good bye big sky!

 Cheers, Dawn

Plein air painting and cycling...Life doesn't get better!

I spent the first week of August in Provincetown, MA just cycling and painting.
I went to take a week-long plein air workshop with Lois Griffel in Cape Cod this summer. Lois studied and taught at the Cape Cod School of Art with Henry Hensche, and took over the directorship of the school for 20 plus years after Henry. Needless to say, Lois is a great teacher and has a lot of knowledge and experience to share.

This is my painting step up for the week.   Easel and paint box on top
and the paints and brushes in the bag.   A great way to get around!
Day 4 of the workshop, we painted in a public garden in East Provincetown.
My new artist friend, Roesmarie, looking for the perfect spot.
Lois is painting a demo. I learned a lot about mapping out my values and temperatures first.
Lois begins to add the color after values have been established.
Everyone asks how I paint while camping, well here's the studio tent.
This is a great shot I took while gallery hopping one evening.
I think it will make a great painting.  You know how I like to paint bikes.

The pier at P'Town
What a fun tourist shop. Great color!
This will make a great painting as well.

It was a great trip and I learned a lot.  I can't wait to hit the studio!

Cheers, Dawn

Summer festivals - having a little fun while on the road

I started my 2 month tour of in Michigan and have been crisscrossing the North every since. Here are a few of the highlights so far.

My first show was the Krasl Art Festival in St Joseph MI. I had an artist host family for the show. The Krasl Art show provided artist with free lodging for the weekend.
This was just 15 mins from the show.

The sunrise in St Joesph MI. This is the view from my front porch for the weekend.

After  MI, I headed over to Hyannis, MA for a show and as luck would have it, my good friends Brian and Karen were visiting the Cape at the same time so we did a little vacationing together.

Pathway to the beach
Take a ride with me! We are in the town of Hyannis
The sailing club at Hyannis Port
Sam Barber's oceanside studio. I am so jealous!
Here I am with Sam at his year round studio. Total studio envy!
Brian and Karen are off to Mystic for sailing and more vacationing.
So, it's back to work for me. Here I am getting ready for the art show in Hyannis.
It was a hot one!  These 2 girls would have stayed with me and the
fan all day. They were really funny and I enjoyed their company.
I think their mom like the free time as well.
After the Hyannis show, I was able to meet Karen and Brian in
Boston for a day. Here we are at the Kennedy Library

Cheers!!!!  You guessed it - we're at Cheers!

Getting ready for the tour of Fenway Park
Well, that's all for now folks.
Cheers! Dawn

Paintings from the Palette Knife Workshop

This past Saturday nine wonderful artists new to the palette knife joined me for a workshop at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center.  The workshop was from 10 - 4 and everyone left with a better understanding of how to use  the palette knife in their paintings. I wish I had brought my camera to the class. Here are to 2 paintings I did to demonstrate the different techniques.  The workshop was a lot of fun and I look forward to teaching it again.  Cheers, Dawn

I just got  back from the High Museum. I went to see the  Toulouse-Lautrec and Delacroix to Picasso Exhibits.  The Lautrec posters were a lot of fun, and I enjoyed trying out my very limited French,

Today is a great day to go if you live in Fulton Co. The first Sat of every month is free. So get do to the High and check out the art.

Go see art - it's good luck!

Virtual Paint out February - Romania

Okay, here is my third Virtual Paint Out submission. This month is Romania. I choose to work in oils for this painting - which is my first oil painting in over ten years!
Below you can see the google map location that I used to create the painting. I am having so much fun with this. I like the challenge of a new place every month and it's cool to explore new places via the internet.

Follow the Leader
24x24 oil on canvas

Let me know what you think of the new oil painting.
Cheers,
Dawn

Virtual Paint Out Boston

Fenway Park, Boston  20 x 30 Acrylic on canvas

Okay, here is my second submission to Virtual Paintout. This month the city is Boston. It's a neat idea. Every month they pick a location and by using Google Maps, you find a street view and paint it. All submission for the month are posted on the blog http://virtualpaintout.blogspot.com/
Here are my street views below. I used a combination of two views this month because I wanted to include the restaurant on the left.
Well, I have enjoyed this project and I look forward to next month. Happy Painting!

Cheers, Dawn

HomeGrown Artist Opening - Stop by and see me this Friday!!! You're going to love the Home Grown. Cheers, Dawn

Start off 2011 with snow

Filming interrupted. Our street was blocked off for filming but the snow had other plans.

The formal snow man created by one of my neighbors

Sunday night at the top of the street as the storm blows in

Walking down Peachtree. We saw people ice skating up and down P'tree. Can you believe it?

Burrrrr.....in the studio

Inflatable kayak coasting down Oak Hill in Piedmont. What fun

Urban Hockey on 10th St

Sledding down the hill off 10th

All the snow was fun for a day or two but I'm ready to get back to life. I can't believe so much of the country deals with this all winter. No wonder we're friendly in the South. We're not freezing and shoveling snow everyday.
