Gnome Delivered and ready to be auctioned off
All right, I have finished my gnome and dropped here off at Cabbatown Clay and Glass works for the May 11 auction. I think she looks pretty good in my garden. I hate to part with her. |
On Saturday, May 11, from 4:00 – 7:30 pm, the Cabbagetown Clay and Glass Works (CCGW) and Garden*Hood, are making it easy to own your own Gnomes in the Hood. Enjoy the sights and scents of spring plants, sip a cocktail, and view garden gnomes of all varieties. The event will feature one-of-a-kind gnomes (or “gnomesses”) created by 25 local artists (painters, sculptors) who have joined forces with CCGW’s artists. The unique gnomes will be auctioned off by silent auction with light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in the luscious flowering space of Garden*Hood, a neighboring plant and garden center. Gnomes in the Hoodwill benefit CCGW, http://ccgworks.wordpress.com/ a non-profit, cooperative, artist-run studio, and to support their community outreach. CCGW members will be presenting free workshops to local transitional housing programs for women and for veterans.
The Gnomes in the Hood fundraiser coincides with Garden*Hood’sMother’s Day Bouquet Buffet, a yearly tradition where individuals can create the perfect container garden for mom. Staff of the independent retail garden center set up a “buffet” of the supplies you’ll need as well as a nursery full of plants and pottery from which to choose. Kids of all ages are welcome. TheBouquet Buffet is open 10am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12.
It is easy to attend both events, as well as to shop in the Cabbagetown Clay and Glass Works’ studio, since they are located across the street from each other on the corner of Boulevard and Woodward Avenues, between I-20 and Memorial Drive. CCGW is at 588 Woodward Avenue, 30312 and Garden*Hood is at 353 Boulevard SE, 30312.
Here are s few of the amazing gnomes created by the folks at CCGW. Awesome!!! |

Sunshine - prefect for the spring
This is a palette knife painting I did as a demo for one of my palette knife classes. I just really like the way the light bounces around on this one. One of the students wanted to buy it in class, but I just felt so uncomfortable talking about money and sales during the workshop, I wouldn't sell it. So believe it or not, I still have this little jewel.
Sunshine 12 x 16 $350 Just send me an email if you would like to take this one home, it's ready to meet you! dawn@dawnart.com Happy Spring!! Dawn |

Artist Retreat with Jane Filer
I had the most amazing time in the outer banks last weekend.
About 35 artists gathered under the direction of Jane Filer to paint, learn and mingle.
Jane is a wonderful artist with a great love of her craft and life. I am so inspired. Sometimes it's nice to be reminded just how lucky you are to be an artist. I made quite a few new friends, so I hope to go again next year.
First painting, still in the works |
Second painting. This is from a photo taken along 85 South. I just love how the sky is opening up after the storm. |
Have a great weekend!

Hot new work out of the studio
Under the Tuscan Sun 12"x16" oil on canvas |
Sunset Boogie 46"x60" Oil on canvas I didn't use the palette knife as much on this one. I think the color is the super star in this one - I didn't want to over complicate it with too much texture. |

Picking up Speed! 30x36 Mixed Media $1400
I am so happy to finally finish this one. I have been 95% finished for months and just hadn't had the time in the studio to make it happen. Seems like I have been behind on my work since the new year started. I have just finished a commission I've been working on, so I should be able to focus back on my projects.

3 Day Palette Knife Workshop
Sometimes it's just great to take an art class and learn from new and different artists.
I'm taking a palette knife workshop with Leslie Saeta this week and so far it's been a blast.
I'm taking a palette knife workshop with Leslie Saeta this week and so far it's been a blast.
To begin with we painted a value study. Always an important step when looking for the design in your painting. |
Next we painted a similar still life, but with color this time. This wraps up our first day and it was a lot of fun. |
|
This is what I worked on today. 2-12"x12" canvases.
Now off to my evening class at SCAD.
Teaching, instead of being a student, but I'll be back as student tomorrow morning. I think we are painting boats. Yay!!
Happy Painting,
Dawn

My first big painting since the 30 day challenge, 30 paintings in 30 days. It felt wonderful to be back in the studio and work big and bold again. I would like to work on series of the large landscapes and see where I can take it.
Happy painting!
Dawn

Painting 30 - I made it!!!
Well, I can't believe it is the last day. It's been a challenge but I made it. As I was working on my painting today, it made me a bit reflective. It seems I've always had a fight in my work between form and expressionism. In college I doubled in sculpture and painting. But when it came down to it,
I had to work it out in a two dimensional plane. There is just nothing like it. So, my work comes down to that fight, the beauty and strength of color and form. I look forward to what tomorrow brings.
Until then, Dawn
Painting 29 - Apple Boogie
5x7 Apple Boogie Oil on canvas |
We were lucky today, with all the bad weather in the area, I just had flooding.
The studio is swamped. Good thing I have a slotted floor that allows the water to pass through the floor and drain. Still - what a mess!
Another great addition to the house. We put a roof over the back doors. Now I have a workspace when the weather is bad. Today I had to build frames for my show this weekend. |
Even better, while the other half of the house is without a tenet, I can use that space as well. Overall I think I fared pretty well for such a stormy day!
Until tomorrow,
Dawn
