Painting with Color Confidence II
Color Confidence 2 - Learn to control your neutrals
Callanwolde Art Center
Feb 22 Sat 10am - 3 pm 1 Day
Now that you have mastered pure color
and are comfortable moving color from one hue to another, learn how to create and manipulate neutral colors. This class will focus on understanding the colors you have mixed on your palette, or store bought colors, and then how to get the most life out of your color without making mud. This class is about really seeing the colors before you and then using color theory to get the results you want on the canvas. The first half of the class will be demos and discussion, and then you will create a painting to practice your color confidence. I will be teaching the class in oils, but you may use acrylics. Contact me with any questions. dawn@dawnart.com Bring a sack lunch and such.

Happy Fall - time to settle into the studio!
Happy Fall!
I have had a fantastic summer. Enjoyed a lot of traveling, painted in really cool places and got to hang out with great friends. Now, with just a few art shows left in the year, I am looking forward to settling into the studio and creating new work for 2014.
I have been thinking a lot about color lately and my new painting ( I hope ) will reflect this. It all started with a color confidence workshop I taught over the summer. I have been trying to really simplify color theory for my students and put it in easy to understand language. How do make it practical for how people really paint? I think this turned out to be one of the best classes I have taught about color, so I am now in the process of creating a second level, Color Confidence 11. I'm really excited about this class, but haven't gotten it boiled down to the nuts and bolts just yet.
I really look forward to the time in the studio over the winter. the pressure of sales is off and I can focus on creating and understanding color.
Happy fall ya'll!

A Studio Make Over
It is amazing how you can go to the same place everyday and just block out the mess. I have been in this studio for about 14 years and have seriously out grown it as it is. I just kept adding a shelf here and there as time went by and a lot my space wasn't usable anymore.
Time to Feng Shui the studio!
The Before.... |
First step, take out the shelves and get to the bare wall. What a Mess! |
Step 2,Supplies bought, so time to start insulating |
Now that one wall has insulation, I can put up the weather treated plywood. Next step will be to drop the ceiling to 8 feet and insulate that. See below. |
That the bulk of the heavy work is finished, I can start building storage racks. YAY! |
What the heck, might as well make a space for A/C. |
WooHoo A/C in! |
Studio revamped and now time to work. |
I am truly loving my new space. Everything has a place and I am keeping cool and dry. Happy Painting Ya'll!!! Dawn |

New friends and great times in Elizabeth City,NC
I truly cannot remember when I have had so much fun as this past week as an Artist in Residence in Elizabeth City, NC. I met so many great artists and people in the area, that I could just go on and on. Every day was a new adventure, we went to the Outer Banks, we took boat rides, we painted together, laughed and talked shop. Had a big party with a seafood boil, danced and played music together....
These are a few photos from the week. I'm happy to be back home with so many great stories to share. Thank you for hosting me Joe and Carolyn Peel. You two rock!!
Happy painting ya'll!

Building a painting from scratch
A few weeks ago I was driving back from Indiana and I kept passing all these great barns out in the fields. The golden hay contrasting with the purples and siennas of the soil really struck me.
When I passed this light blue barn, I knew I had to make a painting.
I had too many miles ahead of me to stop and take photos, so I made notes and decided to paint from memory.
The first thing I did was set up my composition. I wanted the clouds to cross in the sky to the left and the shadows and highlights in the grasses to zag to the left as well setting up a sidewise V and then have an element on the far right to cross the V.
Next, I start making decisions on the color and perspective.
Decided to change the view of the barn. I wanted it turned a little instead of straight on. And the worked on controlling the color.
Pulling the color together, the clouds seem too pronounced at this point.
Breaking Storm 12x36 oil on canvas |
Okay, this is what I came up with. I brought the changing sky back and worked on the trees on the left and tried to pull together all of my elements to create an overall harmony.
