About time! I finally updated my art page!

It is amazing how long it can take sometimes to go from painting, completing a painting, photographing your paintings, uploading them to your computer....months later trying to remember what file they are in...... cropping images, and then finally getting them up on your website! Holy Cow! I have to come up with a more organized way. Well, it is a new year, so here's hoping! I have lot's of new paintings up in my Square Market. You can check them out by the link below. Let me know what you think.

Cheers! - Dawn

I love to be on

the

water and boats are one of my favorite

things to paint. This 3 hour

s course will cover issues like different way to handle the knife, blocking in design, color mixing , and capturing reflected light. Students

 should expect to

loosen up and

create expressive paintings with a palette. Working with a palette knife allows a broad range of textures.  Students learn the nuances of value, working wet in wet and layering in order to keep colors rich and vibrant.  There will be an emphasis on color mixing and keep you colors clean (no muddy colors) This course will begin with a demo to cover the basic approach.  Demonstrations will continue as well as working one on one with the students as you work on your paintings. All levels welcome. Appropriate for beginners. The class will be taught using oils. Please contact instructor at

dawn@dawnart.com

 with any questions.

The class will be taught using oils. Can use Acrylics with a slow drying medium.

Supply List Palette Knife Workshop

Bring what you have but this is what you need for class.

I prefer working in oils because my mixture will stay wet for the class. Acrylic will  dry quickly  so you will need to keep them wet with water or a retarder.

Here is a list of suggested colors. But bring what you have. I like to have cool or neutral yellow, a warm blue, and a cool red and blue. Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, and Burnt Sienna are just great to mix with.

** See more about pigment codes below*

  • Pick a cool red - Alizarin Crimson Pigment code PR83, or Permanent Rose Pigment code PV19 (primary).
  • Pick a warm red -  Such as a Naphthol Red pigment code PR170, a Cadmium Red or hue - (either the light of the medium), the Cad light, PR108, will be more orange and the Cad Med, also PR108, will be more scarlett. An orange such as Cad Orange will work as well
  • Pick a cool or neutral Yellow - *Cadmium Yellow Light, PY 35 or PY3, or Cadmium Lemon PY 35 (primary), or Hansa Yellow PY 74
  • Pick a cool blue -  Phthalo Blue, Phthalo Blue Green Shade PB 15 (primary), Cerulean Blue Chromium PB36. Prussia Blue, Manganese Blue – Just fine
  • Pick a warm blue - Ultramarine Blue PB29 , or Cobalt Blue PB 28
  • Titanium white   5OZ Tube  (Opaque wihte)
  • Yellow Ochre PY 42, or Yellow Oxide, either will be fine will be fine. (Great for Mixing)
  • Sap green or any warm green (mixture & gray for mixing)

Optional colors to add later

Naphthol Red/ Cadmium Red or hue / an orange (Warm Red)

Dioxide Purple

(Combo of the  red and blue primaries - great for mixing)

Burnt Sienna (Great for Mixing)

  • 9 x 12, 12 x 12,12 x 16 or panel or larger (panels work better for palette knife, but canvas is fine for all other classes) Bring extra panels or canvas pad for practice
  • Acrylic and oil disposable Palette Pad 9 x12 . You can use a roll wax paper
  • Palette knives  plastic or metal  - The  plastic 5 pack at Binders is great for beginners

***If just buying one get Utrecht 1003 or one similar to the image below

Paint thinner to help base coat your canvas. Turpenoid  or liquid for oils -  water for acrylics

  • Sketch pad
  • Pencil
  • Roll of paper towels

If using oils you may want LIQUIN IMPASTO or Solvent

to extend the paint

If using acrylics you will need a

slow drying medium

 or

retarder

and spray bottle for water to help slow the dry time.

* All have the same code PY35. Make sure to open the tube on Cad yellow light, Lemon and some times Cad Yellow Medium and check to see it doesn't have an orange tint. Same name and pigment code Cad Yellow - but some are neutral and some have too much red. Cad Lemon should be the coolest. You can always add red, but you can’t take it out**

**Where do you find the pigment codes and what does it tell me?

Manufacturers are free to give their art supply colors whatever name they deem appropriate. Different manufacturers give different names to the same color, even if the same  pigments are used. Therefore, names may vary from one brand to another. I tend to buy single pigments except for color that I mix all the time. If love a mixture that I don’t want to buy, often the codes on the back will tell me how to mix it myself. Also, I like working with a lot of transparent colors. You can always add a touch of white to make them opaque.

Alizarin Crimson PR: 83 (single pigment)

PR: 83 – The first letter Identifies whether a pigment or a dye is used. Here the P indicates that a pigment is used.

PR: 83 – The second letter identifies the pigment code. Here, the pigment code stands for red.

PR: 83 – The number indicates the specific pigment number.

Sap Green PG7, PY75, PBk9 (mixture of three pigments)

Treats For My Nutty Family

This year I wanted to make treats for my family that would pass my mom's healthy test but still be tasty enough that they'd actually eat them...hopefully love them! So after much ado, I decided on spicy garlic nuts. I am going to turn up the heat for my dad and brother and make a milder version for mom.

Spicy Garlic Nuts

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups unsalted nuts (I used equal parts walnuts almonds, and  pistachios)
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons garlic oil (I made my own, but you can usually roasted garlic oil near the other oils. )
  • 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (I found a great recipe for this and made my own as well - remember, I have to convince my mom)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • For extra spicy cayenne pepper to taste. I really like a little heat so I went with 2 tablespoon. Habanero could be interring as well is a smaller dose.
  • You can also squeeze a lime into the mix
Pre-heat oven to 250°F. Line a half sheet pan with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Place all nuts in a large bowl and toss well to combine.
Pour the garlic oil and Worcestershire sauce over the nuts and toss to coat. Mix the dry spices in a separate small bowl and sprinkle evenly over the oiled nuts. Again toss well to coat. Use a silcone spatula to scrape the bottom of the bowl so that there are no pockets of oil.
Spread the coated nuts on the parchment lined pan. Bake the nuts for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir well with a silicone spatula or wooden spoon. Bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the nuts are mostly dry to the touch. They will continue to dry as they cool, so be careful to not over bake.
Remove nuts from oven and let cool on paper towels to remove any liquid. Sprinkle with additional salt if desired and serve. Store any leftovers airtight at room temperature.
Notes
I turned off the heat and left them in the oven for and additional 5 minutes.  Also - After making the oil, I took the garlic cloves out, diced them to tiny pieces and cooked them in a clean, dry pan until crispy. Add to nut with all the other ingredients for a little more garlic taste.
really like spicy foods  - I could've gone with more pepper.

Worcestershire Sauce Recipe
Taken from the little house living blog. Great blog with lots of great recipes
What You Need:
(Makes about 1 cup of sauce)
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/8 cup molasses
  • 1/8 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon or ground clove
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • Juice from 1/2 lime
In a small saucepan, mix ingredients together and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.  Remove from heat and pour into a blender.  Blend until smooth. Store in a dressing bottle, or covered bowl in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
Garlic Oil Recipe
  • 4 garlic peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup virgin olive oil
Add the garlic and oil into a small sauce pan. Use medium heat until the oil just starts to bubble, then turn it to low for about 5 minutes. The garlic used start to brown. Let oil cool. You can use it just like this, add the garlic to a jar and put the oil over it. Should last a few days in the fridge. I like to put the garlic back in the pan and cook until it's crispy and dry.

I hope everyone has a safe and stress free holiday and that 2015 is very good to you all!!

Winter Projects

Now that classes are winding down for the year, it's time to start new wood working projects!
My inlaws gave me a sawsall for my birthday and it is awesome! No more ripping these pallets apart with a crowbar, just put in the wood and metal blade and go to town! I have about a month in the studio without classes. So I am going to build storage shelves for students to keep their materials and I need about four or five more work tables for the class room. Check out all the wood I've been able to get from palettes already. I so love having all these free wood! And, I still have eight more palettes. Should be enough to keep me busy for awhile.

I love to be on the water and boats are one of my favorite things to paint. This 3 hours course will cover issues like different way to handle the knife, blocking in design, color mixing , and capturing reflected light. Students should expect to loosen up and  create expressive paintings with a palette. Please contact instructor at dawn@dawnart.com with any questions.

The Inaugural Class!

Well, the studio is finally open and last night was the first class. It was such a hubbub of activity, I completely forgot to take any photos. But here it is the next day. I love having all this activity in the studio. Just feels great to walk through it. Maybe next week I'll remember to take a photo of artists at work.

Happy Painting!

New Studio in Midtown Now Open for Classes

I am very excited about my new teaching space in Midtown. I have recently renovated the apartment in our charming house in Midtown into a teaching studio and will begin teaching painting classes and workshops this month. You can check out my blog to see the  improvements and work in progress.  http://dawnart.blogspot.com/2014/08/work-in-studio.html
Having my own teaching space will allow for a lot of extra features you just can't offer other places. So I'm really looking forward to it and I think my students will love it.

I hope you can join me for a class or workshop.

6 Days, 10 Palettes, 9 Tables Later....Studio's Almost Ready!

The bulk of the work is finished and I'm ready to start offering classes in my new studio space.
Despite all the thunder storms this week, I was able to finish my studio project. I set up a tent in the back yard to be able to keep building and then used the front porch for the finishing work, mainly the sanding and painting.
Classes start on September 23 and I needed furniture for the students, mainly tables to hold their supplies. I decided to build my own out of reclaimed wood to match the feel of my cottage styled studio in Midtown. I made each table a little different, all about the same height, but I played with the pattern of the wood and made a few full-sized tables as well. I want it to be inviting, a place that students can feel comfortable and creative! So here it is ...6 days, 10 palettes and 9 tables later.

I hope my classes love the new space !

Studio Tables are in the Works

I decided to build the studio furniture for my classes out of reclaimed wood. I love the idea of boycotting plastic and having hand built tables the really match the style of the studio.   Decided to go with a distressed blue and white color palette that goes with the venetian plaster and the white molding in the rooms. I think it'll give the space a warm and inviting feel. Hope my students will love it as well!
