Favorite Subject For Painting

I love painting scenes of cyclists. I guess it makes me feel the joy of being out on two wheels while working in the studio! Here I'm using a photo by my friend and great photographer Kevin McPeake for my inspiration. You can check out his work on Facbook

I loved this photo when I saw it: love the diffused light and the mystery in the fog.  I painted this image about a year ago ( middle image ), but decided to give it another try and work on the grays a little differently. Here's the second attempt ( the image on the right). I was a little bolder with the reds. Although it similar to the first painting, this one feel more like night time to me.

Time to finish!

All of us get so excited about the next painting or next project. I love to get started! But as the days go by and so many things need attention, it can be hard to keep that energy going......and finish the painting! So, over the holiday break from classes, I am going to tackle my homework pile. This 30" x 40" painting is the first on my list. Time to revisit Vernazza and see if I can finish it. This poor thing has been sitting in the studio for years, just waiting on

Northern Adventures!

A few highlights from my trip. Make sure to check out the cyclist with a dog stand.

Every August I flee the Atlanta heat and head up north for weeks of painting and shows.

I start the month off in Provincetown, MA, with my dear friend Rosemarie. We met in a workshop several years back and now have a standing painting date for the week in P'town.  Even with the overcast days this year, the light and ocean were just wonderful. I look forward to this week all year!

After my show in CT and a few days at Rosemarie's house I head over to Pennsylvania for a show and a visit with one of my favorite couples, Art and Margaret Thorn.  They are generous enough to put me up for a few days during the show. It's just so much fun hanging out and hearing about how their year has been.

Fortunately the shows were good this year. I sold several big paintings and even won an award this year at Gretna. While that is always great, what makes this trip so special is the time I get to spend with friends.

Until next year!!

Painting the week away in P'Town!

There have been a lot of gray days this year for our annual painting trip, but it has been a great challenge to try to capture the overcast sky. My friend Rosemarie and I spend the first week of August painting away in Provincetown MA, and this is the first year it has rained. The rain has been light and the fog has been beautiful, so I have really enjoyed the challenge..almost as much as hanging out with one of my favorite painting peeps, Rosemarie Mendes!!

Happy Spring Ya'll

Update  - I just touched this up in the studio and I think I'm happy with it. I have been trying for awhile to figure out how paint the scrubby trees as they are just coming out to bloom.

What a great day to be out there painting! A good start for spring. I went back to the Nature Reserve this week and tried to finish my painting from last week.

I was listening to the book"Julia Child" while painting today, I got so involved,  I forgot to snap a photo before leaving. Here's what I got done today.

Have a great day!

On the Easel Today

The fourth painting in my fall series. I started this in my open studio painting class last night and was able to work on it a little bit more this evening. I know this probably looks like a painting about a river in a field, but it's really about moving color back and forth in space. That's why I love painting, there is always a new challenge to work on.

Happy painting!

Painting Day 16

"Sunset Sail" 12 x 16 oil on canvas, palette knife painting.

After spending all day woking on the computer, it was a relief to get out to the studio and paint.
An important part of my job is photographing my work and then editing the photos to get them ready to jury into shows, print ads, website, etc... Today was the day to make a dent in that task. After a couple failed attempts, decided to hire someone to edit my booth shot.  That's always a tough one, but so important for getting into outdoor shows.

For any of you looking to apply to out door art shows you should check out Larry Berman, he does a great job and his site has a lot of great tips on how to take your own photo.

I still have room in my Color Confidence Workshop this weekend. This is a great class to help you control you color mixing.
Until tomorrow,

Dawn
