Painting Day 17

"Lazy Day on the River" 16x20 oil on canvas, palette knife painting.

Yay, another one for the finished rack.

I am teaching a workshop in the morning, so now I had better get my supplies together and finish my demos.

Happy Friday!

Painting Day 16

"Sunset Sail" 12 x 16 oil on canvas, palette knife painting.

After spending all day woking on the computer, it was a relief to get out to the studio and paint.
An important part of my job is photographing my work and then editing the photos to get them ready to jury into shows, print ads, website, etc... Today was the day to make a dent in that task. After a couple failed attempts, decided to hire someone to edit my booth shot.  That's always a tough one, but so important for getting into outdoor shows.

For any of you looking to apply to out door art shows you should check out Larry Berman, he does a great job and his site has a lot of great tips on how to take your own photo.

I still have room in my Color Confidence Workshop this weekend. This is a great class to help you control you color mixing.
Until tomorrow,

Dawn

Painting Day 15

"Get'en While They're Hot!" 5 x 7 palette knife painting. On my busy days I'm working on classic Atlanta scenes. This is the latest. Hopefully, if I keep at them, they'll get better!

Over the weekend I was able to build new painting surfaces for my next series. YAY!  I started this one today after my fantastic class at C4. More on that later, until tomorrow! Dawn

Painting Day 12

After another busy day in the studio, I painted another small Atlanta classic. Once again, I'm unhappy with the lettering. Something to work on in the future, I'm sticking with the palette knife for these. Sure to improve with time. All the best, Dawn

Happy painting!
Classes start back soon.

Painting Day 11

"Majestic" 5x7 - Another Atlanta classic. I'm having fun with these, although I would really like clean up the lettering a little bit. Maybe when it dries.
"Majestic" 5x7oil on canvas, palette knife painting

Since we finally had a day without rain or freezing temperatures, I spent most of it ripping wood to size for frame and painting surface. I mean, who knows when we'll have another nice day. The weather has been so crazy lately!
Getting as much wood cut before it freakin' rains again.

Now that I have it ripped to size, I can nail then together to make my framing molding. It was dark before I finished, so I'll post pics later on how to make a floater frame.

Happy Saturday, Dawn

For part of the challenge I wanted resolve up my stack of unfinished paintings. It's always so much fun to start a new painting, I seem to forget to back and finish. Opps. I think this one is about there. So....that means I can start a new one tomorrow, YAY!
This is from a photo I took while at the botanical gardens in Hershey, PA.
Sorry about the horrible photo again, it's tough to get a good photo in the studio

Painting Day 4

For my 4th painting in the challenge I decided to stick with the warm weather theme.  It's always nice to paint a little sunshine when it's freezing outside. The great thing about living in Georgia is that I know it will warm back up soon.

9x12 Tied up at the Moment. Oil on panel, palette knife painting.

I spent the day building large panels, so I hope to have a big one soon, Yay!

Painting for Day 3

Painting for the day!  This one is inspired by the wonderful fall trees we had this season. I have always enjoyed painting trees. In the series I am working on now, I really want to capture the range of colors in the season.  There's a lot to explore with this new color palette, so let's see what I can come up with next.

Plein air Thursday - 2013

This year my friend and fellow painter, Carol Violanda, and I started a new plein air group in Atlanta that meets up every Thursday. Our motto " We create the group, they will come!"
And so far it has worked out really well. I have made new arts friends and discovered all sorts of new places in Atlanta that I didn't even know existed. Here are few of the highlights of our adventures.
Hope to paint with you in 2014!

WestJet Christmas Miracle:Santa takes to the skies!

This is the best thing ever! West Jet decided to spend some of it's marketing budget on who it would effect the most - it's customers. I think they have made a few fans for life. What do you think? I wish I had been on that flight. Way to go!

Sometimes the gift of giving truly is the greatest gift of all. That's the case for airline WestJet, that put together a feel-good Christmas-themed video which ended up earning them more than 27 million views on YouTube.
In the now-viral video, titled "Christmas Miracle," the folks at WestJet placed life-sized screens featuring Santa Claus in Toronto Pearson International Airport and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport to ask those flying on the airline from what they want for Christmas. Responses ranged from socks and underwear to a train set to a big-screen TV. Little did the passengers know that they would actually be receiving their requests.
In the time between the flights taking off and landing, some 150 WestJet employees hustled to stores like Best Buy to purchase the gifts, wrapped them and then cleared them through airport security. They then prepared hot chocolate at baggage claim as the 250 passengers waited for their luggage to arrive.
As wrapped and labeled gifts headed down the baggage claim shoot instead of suitcases, responses from the passengers ranged from laughter to "No way!" to tears. And though items like the flat screen TV seem expensive, WestJet vice president of communications Richard Bartremtells Forbes that making this video was actually surprisingly cheap.
"For a traditional commercial, you could spend well into the mid-six figures for the production alone," he says, adding that this commercial cost "a mere fraction" of that. Sometimes the gift of good will can be the best one of all.

Palette Knife Workshop: Reflections

Last Saturday I taught a palette knife paint workshop at Callanwolde. I thought I would do something to celebrate the season, so we painted poinsettias and chocolate. It was pouring outside, so I was happy everyone could make, and on time, at that!

There are 2 demos for the the class. The one on the right I did the night before and the other is the demo in class. It's always a good idea to run through a painting before the class. It gives you the chance to work out the composition, colors, etc.. in hopes that you don't make a glaring mistake in public!!

Here is the set up for the class. The class was all about painting reflections, so I went shiny object and put plexi glass down on top of the back drop. I had to big a whole bag of truffles to get the one with a green wrapper, so there was plenty left over to share.

I hope you all have a safe and joyful holiday!
Dawn

Happy painting!
Classes start back soon.

One of my Favorite Paintings of the year

I admit, I feel very lucky to paint for a living! There is always a new challenge in the studio and hopeful enough break through, Aha moments, to keep me inspired. I was looking back over some of my work from this year, and noticed I have really made changes this year. But it always seems like the series I am working on now is my "new favorite". So this is my favorite painting right now.

Treehouse 36 x 36 oil on canvas. Palette knife painting.
Framed in black floater frame -  40"x40"

Here is another favorite from the year. You can really tell a difference between the two. After working with just the palette knife for so many years, I really wanted to come back to the brush and play with created different surfaces in the painting.
Sunset Boogie 48 x 60 oil on canvas  SOLD
I have to admit, I love the intense colors in this one…and it's huge which is always so much fun and exciting to work on. These paintings a different, but that is what I love about painting. There are just so many possibilities, new ideas to explore, I look forward to hitting the studio each day.

Cheers,

Dawn

Let's Make Art!!

Making beautiful art with the 2 year olds at St. Anne's Day school.

This is the second year I have participate in the artists residence program and help a class make a piece of art for the yearly fundraiser. I am looking forward to the project and can't wait to see how it comes out, but with a group of 12…I am a bit nervous!
After meeting with the teachers and coming up with an idea, The next step is building the panel and  adding texture. The texture will give it a neat look when finished .

Now it's ready for the class. The class is called the Treehouse 2's, I thought this image would be a good fit.

Let the  painting begin! With a class of twelve, we decided to break up the painting groups to two at time. I masked off the ground part of the painting so the kids could go wild with the sky.
Look at them go!
Sky is in, so time to work on the ground.
This is what we have for this week. I am going to come back next week and we will work on the leaves. What a great job treehouse 2's!

I'll let you know how next week goes,

Dawn
