Kick off for the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational

Join me Wed, April 22, for plein air demonstrations at Callanwolde. Callanwolde has partnered with the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational and will be hosting plein air artist for their first home school festival. I'll be out there painting from 10 - 2 on Wed, and you can find me at the Olmsted Parks the rest of the week. This is going to be a great event! 30 professional artist from across the US and over seas will be out at the Olmsted Parks for the painting competition. If you'd like to try your hand at plein air, there is an event on Sunday for all artists. It's the Paint Quick Event. It's 20.00 to enter and there will be awards and an opportunity to sell you painting as well.

Dawn Kinney Martin is an Atlanta-based artist with national and international collectors. Each year she paints plein air, which is painting on location, and takes photographs on her travels. These are used as reference materials throughout the year at her studio. Recognition for her expressive oil paintings includes acceptance at an Artists in Residence Program in Elizabeth City, NC, June 2013, November 2014 and a Merit Award from Manhattan Arts International Museum in New York for their juried exhibition, Herstory 2004. Emily Clanton is a creative-type living in the Atlanta area. Her latest work is inspired by traditional Japanese painting and her personal investigations into nourishing foods and their affects on the human body. Painting the week away in P'Town!

There have been a lot of gray days this year for our annual painting trip, but it has been a great challenge to try to capture the overcast sky. My friend Rosemarie and I spend the first week of August painting away in Provincetown MA, and this is the first year it has rained. The rain has been light and the fog has been beautiful, so I have really enjoyed the challenge..almost as much as hanging out with one of my favorite painting peeps, Rosemarie Mendes!!

You will learn about pure color and why it is so important, how to bend a color, how to use the color wheel to lighten and darken your colors, and more. The first half of the workshop will demonstrate the color mixing lessons, then students will be able to apply their new knowledge with a painting. Plein air painting weekend retreat!

Mark you calendars for May 30 - June 1. The plein air group is headed to the Parker Ranch for a great weekend of plein air painting. We can come up Friday evening or Saturday morning, it's up to you. I am going to arrive on Friday so I can start painting right away. This is a wonderful lodge in Clayton Ga. A little about the lodge. It's a laid back lodge built in the 1907 as an Atlanta family summer home in Clayton GA. It has 6 rooms all with private baths. Some room are double occupancy - two beds - so you can share a room if you'd like. Just let Becky know when you call or email. Clayton is about 1hour and 45 minutes from Atlanta and should be a pretty easy drive. The Ranch is about one mile from downtown Clayton with good restaurants and lots of charm.

A Great Thursday for Painting

After such a long standing pattern of great weather for the start of the only to lead to horrible weather on Thursdays, the pattern has finally broken and we've had a couple of nice Thursdays in a row. This week it was actually cold and rainy on Wed and Friday, but perfect for us on Thursday.

 My friend Carol and I started  Pleinairthurdays back in September. We meet each Thursday somewhere in the Atlanta area and paint plein air. We have a Facebook page for the group where we post the location each week and anyone can join us. I love the practice! I have always been an outdoorsy sort and I just love the challenge of painting on location. It has turned out to be a great way to explore the city, but really the best part is the fellowship with other artists. It's so great to out of the studio and paint with other artists.

 After painting the afternoon away, I decided to take advantage of the location and hike Kennesaw Mountain.

Plein Air Competition This Weekend!

II have been preparing for my first plein air competition and it's almost here! This weekend is the 3rd Annual Paint Out at the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. Check in start at 7 am each morning to have your canvas stamped, although I doubt I'll start that early. All artists have to turn the stamped canvas in at the end of the day. Judging begins at 3:00 on Sunday, followed by a reception and sale from 6:30 - 8:30.

I wanted to make sure I was comfortable and very portable for this weekend so I made a new palette shelf for my easel. I took it out yesterday to give it a try and I LOVE IT ! I had room for everything. I put a shoulder strap on it so it was easy to carry as well.  If you find yourself in Marietta this weekend, stop by and say hello.

Happy Spring Ya'll

Update  - I just touched this up in the studio and I think I'm happy with it. I have been trying for awhile to figure out how paint the scrubby trees as they are just coming out to bloom.



What a great day to be out there painting! A good start for spring. I went back to the Nature Reserve this week and tried to finish my painting from last week. 

I was listening to the book"Julia Child" while painting today, I got so involved,  I forgot to snap a photo before leaving. Here's what I got done today.

Painting Day 27

Glad to wrap up my painting of the day. Now that I am finished, I can go inside and warm my toes!!! What a day. The snow wasn't supposed to hit Atlanta, but hit it  did! I was so worried about Rob out on the roads, but he made home safely, even though he had to walk the last couple of miles.YAY!  Below photos of the studio.

Painting Day 25 - Still in Sunny Florida

It warmed up for a both this afternoon, which was delightful! Can't say the same about my paintings. I had a few slow starts and I just wasn't happy with the color, composition, yada, yada, yada!!! So here is what I could come up with before the sun went down!  12x16 oil on panel.

This is the last day of the painting trip. I had a great time and only wish the weather had been a little better. Goodbye to all my painting friends, until next year!

Painting Day 24


 Brrrr. My coldest day out painting this year! I can't believe it's sleeting in Florida

Remember the fontain I painted yesterday?
This is what I could get done before I just got too cold. I didn't bring warm enough clothes. Who knew?!? I don't know how northern plein air artists do it!

The inspiration, I just love this house. Reminds me of New Orleans

Painting Day 23 in Florida

"Just 'cause it's sunny doesn't mean it's warm!" 5x7 oil on canvas. Okay, I knew it was going to be cold, but I wasn't prepared for the wind. It might have gotten up to 40, but I was still chilly all day. Oh, well, at least I 'm here in sunny Florida painting up a storm!

Apparently my subject wasn't very warm either. Just as I started  my painting, he went in to warm up and never can back! I ended up just having to make someone up to be the artist at work. Maybe I should title this on "Union Break". Haha! Tomorrow should be cooler, so I'll be wearing more layers for sure. Saturdays weather should be perfect!!
